47 horses competing for a spot in the 24-stayer final field for the 150th Melbourne Cup set to run as Race 7 at Flemington on Tuesday November 2, 2010. Shocking was winner last year. Melbourne Cup winner Shocking started out wide from barrier 21, the widest winning barrier in a Melbourne Cup field since Brew won from gate 22 in 2000. The 2010 Melbourne Cup is the 150th in an unbroken series.
Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan expects big money for Japanese horse Tokai Trick, French raider Americain and local roughie Once Were Wild. Sullivan said “Tokai Trick has been backed from $51 to $31 with a number of good sized bets including one $40,000 to $1000 each way. So You Think has to be favourite after the way he won the Cox Plate but I am keen to take him on at the 3200m given he has never been past 2040m before. Americain has been very popular since his Geelong Cup win and we have taken bets of $5000 and $3000 on him at $11. Once Were Wild has been a little disappointing so far this Spring after being so impressive in the Autumn, although she was unlucky at Geelong and one punter obviously thinks she can turn it around with a bet of $70,000 to $1000 each way placed on her.”
